Plans are under way for the Kiwi Foundation to release North Island robin on to the Russell Peninsula in autumn next year.
The robin disappeared from Russell years ago. But now, thanks to a successful and sustained programme of pest eradication, conditions are right for the re-introduction of the birds.
For robins to survive and prosper there must be almost no rats, mustelids, feral cats or possums.
This initiative follows the release of 40 North Island weka in 2003 and 2004. There are now at least 200 weka living on the peninsula.
